The Search for an Alternative Fuel

It's hard to overestimate the importance of finding an alt ernative to fossil fuels, for some pretty compelling reasons. Unfortunately, in order to achieve widespre ad use, any alternative fuel has to fill the same energy niches that fossil fuels like oil, gasoline, and coal do. So, what would be the benefits to finding an alternative fuel? And why doesn' t one exist yet?

To look at the up side to increasing the use of alternative fuels, it's important to look at the downsides of fossil fuels. These include:

  • Their effect on climate change.
  • The pollutants they release into the air, including part iculate matter like soot.
  • The difficulty in obtaining, transporting, and refining them .
  • The fact that they are non-renewable.
